Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe
The Coupe originally
referred to as the “Daytona Car” officially obtained its name while
being prepared for the Daytona race. Original there were only six
Daytona Coupe’s built and were designed by Peter Brock while working for
Carroll Shelby. The Daytona Coupe was the first and only American made
car to ever win the World Manufacturer’s Championship for Grand Touring
race cars and transformed American road racing. The Daytona Cobra Coupe
also set 23 International USAC/FIA records, at Sebring 12 hours of
endurance. The record set was an amazing 150-mph for 12 hours.
Superformance (Jim Price)
engaged in discussions with Peter Brock to design a street version of
the Coupe to increase the Superformance Product line. The New
Superformance Coupe boasts with sleek lines, and a contoured body which
is slightly larger than that of the original race car. It has an
engineered and improved suspension which was overseen by Roush
engineering (Bob Negstad and Dan Bamford) and larger interior space as
well. Wes Schulz of ACT performing the finite element analysis.
The Shelby Cobra Daytona
Coupe by Superformance resulted in a grand tourer designed for street
application combining modern technology with old time grace and
classical style and is built under license from Carroll Shelby Licensing
Inc.

CHASSIS: Round tube space frame design that combines
a 60's period look, but conforms to modern packaging and engineering
requirements. The chassis layout was originally done by Jim Price himself,
and then later optimized by the late Bob Negsted and Dan Bamford (of Roush
Engineering) with the finite element analysis by Wes Shultz of ACT. The
tensional stiffness of the chassis alone is in order of 6,000 lbs per
degree!
DRIVE TRAIN: The Coupe is designed to take a Ford
351 Windsor engine that can be stroked to 427 cu in. The chassis was
engineered for a six speed Tremec T56 transmission. The Coupe is fitted with
a 3.46:1 BTR Hydratrack differential, arguably the most modern
slip-controlled differential available for road cars today. Roush
Performance developed the Roush 402 RC engine for the Beta and Gamma
prototypes. The RC develops 501 bhp at 5,900 rpm and 580 ft/lbs of torque at
4,900 rpm, giving the prototype amazing performance figures: 0-60 mph in 3.8
seconds, the standing quarter mile in 11.5 sec and a top speed in excess of
200 mph. PLEASE NOTE: All Superformance products are
supplied complete, but without engines and transmissions. The selection,
purchase and installation of the drive train are the responsibility of the
purchaser.
BODY/INTERIOR: With shape and form styled by Peter Brock, the
composite body is completely new, with advanced aerodynamics.
The front windscreen is a heated and tinted shatterproof unit, the
manually operated wind-up side windows are of toughened glass. The luxurious
two-seater leather-trimmed interior is air conditioned, three-point
retractable seat belts are standard. Modern Stewart Warner instruments.
These and the standard controls are ergonomically laid out. The cockpit,
which offers 35.75" headroom and 4" seat travel, features a full custom-made
air conditioner with heating and cooling as well as multi-speed fans and
directional control. The dash has a lockable glove box and space for a
radio. A remote immobilizer and remote keyless locks and door opening are
standard. A roll bar, a black padded roof liner and a 14"Moto Lita steering
wheel complete the all-black interior.

 SUSPENSION: Bob
Negstad together with Don and Wes designed the fully independent suspension.
The rear suspension is based on the work Bob and Klaus Arning did in the
60's, a truly unique and impressive unequal A arm design front and rear. All
the computer simulations were done by Wes using industry standard ANSYS
software.
SHOCKS AND SPRINGS: Bilstein and H&R collaborated to
create a purpose built set of coil-overs front and rear.
STEERING: The power-assisted rack and pinion
steering has 2.5 turns lock to lock and gives the Coupe a turning circle of
42 ft.
BRAKES: Vacuum-boosted system, Australian PBR calipers with
12.8" x 1.25" vented rotors in front, 12" x 1" in rear. The swept area is
428 sq in, or 310 sq inches per ton.
WHEELS: Cast allow 18" x 8" wheels in front, 18" x
10" at the rear. The wheels are styled similar to the traditional FIA wheel.
Tires of choice are:
Dunlop 9000: 285x50x18 R
255x45x18 F
Pirelli Pzero: 285x45x18 R
255x45x18 F
GENERAL: The radiator has an aluminum core with
built-in water to oil cooler. The exhaust system has the original looking
side pipes but then goes back through a rear-mounted muffler. Full "race"
side mufflers will be available as options. The stainless steel fuel tank is
mounted over the rear axle and holds 21 gallons. There are stowage lockers
under the rear deck and in the rear wheel wells. |
